The 20th century’s information explosion, in English at least, owes much to William Caxton, the 15th‐century publisher, printer, translator, advertiser and seller of books. Just 500 years ago the first pages printed on English soil came clattering off his wooden press at the sign of the Red Pale in Westminster.
