In the mid-1400s, the German craftsman Johannes Gutenberg created a printing-press system that used movable type and became known for his production of printed Bibles. But which country printed what is now the oldest extant book made with movable metal type decades earlier, back in 1377?
- A India
- B Italy
- C Korea
- D Greece
That's Correct!
It's Wrong!
From the University of Utah’s “From Jikji to Gutenberg” research project:
The oldest extant book printed from cast-metal type is the “Jikji Simche Yojeol” (“Essential Passages Pointing Directly to the Mind”). This book, compiled by Master Baegun (1298-1374), recounts stories of venerated Buddhist Chan monks and was printed by Baegun’s students in Cheongju, Korea, in 1377, shortly after his death.
